Homeopathy
HISTORY:
Homeopathy
is based on the cure by similars
which goes back to the time of Hippocrates
(400-470 BC). It wasn't really used for
thousands of years and wasn't followed by the
medical profession. Later on, in 1493-1541, a
German doctor named
Paracelcius
was thought to be practicing unconventional
medicine. He believed in the use of German
folk medicine and "like curing
like". This means a poison that causes
the disease should also be the cure. He
discovered that minute dosages of the
particular substance would in fact cure many
diseases.
Dr.
Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) was a German
physician who became dissatisfied with the
medical professions use of cruel
bloodletting techniques and purging to get
rid of poisonous substances. In later years
Dr. Hahnemann proved the remedy called
Cinchona or China,
from which quinine was derived and found to
cure Malaria. The proving meant Dr. Hahnemann
took the Cinchona bark himself and it
produced symptoms similar to those of
Malaria. This led to the Law of Similars (or
similia similibus curentur), the first law of
a healing technique called "
homeopathy" (homos - similar, pathos -
disease). Since the time of Hahnemann other
homeopaths have followed, such as Constanine
Herring (1800-1880) and James Tyler Kent
(1849-1916). Today we have such experts as
George Vitoulkas, Paul Herscu, Dana Ullman
etc. Homeopathy is being practiced worldwide
with Europeans in the forefront followed by
New Zealand, Australia and Canada and the
United States.
WHAT
ARE HOMEOPATHIC DOSAGES?
Labeling
of homeopathic products is usually provided
in dilution measurements. You may see a 2x or
a 2c or 6x or 6c. The "x" (decimal)
means the substance has been diluted to
the10th power; the number in front signifies
how many times the substance has been diluted
to the 10th power. The "c"
(centesimal) means diluting the substance
with one part the mother tincture in one
hundred. The mother tincture is derived from
the original substance itself then steeped in
alcohol and then strained.
HOW
IS HOMEOPATHY USED TODAY
In
Florida and many other states within the U.S.
there is no formal license necessary to
practice homeopathy. There are National Board
exams that are designed to protect the public
from harm and to insure a certain level of
competency when practicing
homeopathy. Chiropractors,
Acupuncture Physicians, Medical Doctors and
Osteopaths may all practice homeopathy.
Homeopathy has been used successfully to
treat, otis media (middle ear infections),
nausea, headaches, muscle soreness,
premenstrual syndromes, anxiety, shingles,
herpes simplex etc.
AVOID
SELF TREATMENTS
When you
go to the store and read a label on a remedy
you are taking a homeopathic remedy the
Western way. Homeopathy works best when
prescribed by someone with experience in
classical homeopathy with an understanding of
modern, complex remedies. If two people with
a headache go to the store and both buy
remedy #1, they both go home
but only
one will get relief. No two headaches are the
same. A trained homeopathic physican treats
each person individually. With a careful
history, a more correct remedy can be chosen.
